SPOTLIGHT: on Kes Tokyo [Interview]

Hailing from Motherwell PE, today we had the opportunity to chat with upcoming star Kes Tokyo. You know F.A.M.E is about representing talent from the bay so sit back and find out more bout this star, make your city proud and don't forget to vote for him on www.hypemagazine.co.za

First of all, congratulations on the Hype Magazine New Comer’s Delight nomination and your new EP which drops today. How long have you been working on this EP? What made you choose the title “It’s My Krib” for it?

Thank you, I appreaciate this opportunity. Well I’m grateful to be part of the June/July Newcomer’s Edition and I believe the platform they gave me will open more opportunities for me and a recognition country wide as an artist.

Honestly speaking, the process of recording the EP took me less than a month, including  making beats for the songs as I am also a producer/beatmaker. Well,I choose the name because…actually the name of the EP is “IT’S MY KRIB : I AM KRUISING HOME”. i named the EP after I got an email from the Hype Mag editor saying I’ll be part of the newcomer’s delight. The name of the EP simply means the industry is my home and I am on my way towards getting in it.

Wow, so this is your 6th EP, do tell us about your other projects that came before this one & how long have you been on the music industry grind?

Actually its my third EP. I’ve released 3 mixtapes and 3 EPs so far and now I’m currently busy with debut Album which I’m planning to release independently or hopefully under a label, only time will tell.
I’ve been on my grind since I passed my matric. Like most other artist,I started as a member of a group which was called AgeBoyz but it fell off and I’m just keeping on keeping it on. It don’t stop and it cant stop.

You are representing Port Elizabeth on Hype Magazines “Newcomers Delight”, how does it feel getting nationwide exposure and how do you feel about the PE HipHop scenery?

Man I feel blessed, God is answering most of my prayers because I prayed to be in that list and he answered me, prayed to Him to give me strength to survive as an indie artist, and here I am now, still going hard.
Man what I can say about Port Elizabeth Hip Hop scene is that its filled with jealousy and envy. Cats out here don’t work together towards reaching the goal of making the Hip Hop scene in this city to be exploited.

You’re very persistent, and you’ve been around for a while… your progress shows. This is your chance to brag, which other platforms have you been featured on (events or TV) and other accomplishments you’ve got?

lol, well that’s true, it’s been a minute since I’ve been doing this and my accomplishments, well I can only name a few.
When I started doing music i planned to be recognized internationally, in other continents other than Africa and I’ve achieved that cause I’ve worked with other aspiring artist from countries such as the United States and I was featured on a mixtape series called The Underground Fix mixtape with the likes of Fabolous, Yeezy, Jay Rock and other famous US acts. I was also featured on a mixtape of an RnB singer from France named Kahuser. Well those are my accomplishment so far, I’m not satisfied yet.

You’re very unique from your hairstyle, your gold chains to your tattoos and swag. How important is appearance/image to you when it comes to the music industry?

It’s very important cause that’s how you get recognition i.e look at what iFani did with his unique deliverance, swag and the way he dresses, that’s what makes people feel your presence. I believe if you want to make it big in the industry you should have a unique image that’s going to make you stand out so that people can look up to you.

Which one is your favorite tattoo on your body? How old were you when you had your first tattoo and has having a tattoo ever caused any trouble at home?

I love all the ink that’s on me simply because it has a meaning and a little bit of story telling. If you’re planning to do an ink you should make sure that it’s something you wont regret late.
I can say my favourite at the moment is the one on my lower arm sleeve, which is a picture of my face.

So far so good on your music career, you’ve completed “It’s My Krib”, where can we get the EP?  Which tracks from the EP are your personal favorites? Who’s on the production (beats)?

Yes Sir,the EP is available on
and on datafilehost. All the beats on the EP were composed by me and I think all the 5 of the song are dope, people should hear for themselves.

Besides rapping is there another side to Kes Tokyo?? Put away the rap life for a second and tell us your hobbies, and other interests. And if you could choose another talent besides rapping, what you’d would it be?

My whole life I’ve by surrounded by arts man, I remember my mom use to take me to town to draw people she had talked to and told about my talent of drawing for pocket money and at age nine I was a member of a boy’s choir that was based at the church that’s at the Port Elizabeth CBD, I can’t remember the name of the church though lol, so besides writing rhymes I spend my spear time drawing pictures of myselfie why others be camera flicking lol.

Sweet. Let’s to wrap it up, tell us where we can get hold of you and stay updated with your music and movement. We want to know everything, we just want to stalk you.

Lol, that’s funny because lately now that I’m on the Hype Mag’s Newcomer’s Delight I got my whatsapp buzzin…I guess it’s the price of F.A.M.E  HAHA.
On Facebook people should like "Kes Tokyo", on twitter and on Instagram it’s @kestokyo, and I’m very active on both.
